About the Event
This workshop will introduce the teaching content and methods of Shanghai maths, providing a thorough comparison with the UK mathematics curriculum. Participants will explore the core principles of Shanghai maths and experience some real examples of how these techniques can be effectively used in maths classrooms.

Agenda
- Overview of Shanghai Maths (1 hour)
Objective: Provide a foundational understanding of what Shanghai Maths is and how it differs from other teaching methods.
Content:
- Discuss the cultural and historical context in which Shanghai Maths developed, including the high value placed on education in China.
- Comparison with the UK curriculum.
- Introduction to Conceptual Variation and Procedural Variation.
- Pedagogical Techniques (1 hour)
Objective: Introduce the specific pedagogical techniques used in Shanghai maths.
Content:
- Explain the principle of breaking down learning into small, manageable steps, with practical examples.
- Discuss how textbook design in China supports teaching practices, using illustrations and examples from Chinese textbooks as referenced in the book.
- Share techniques for effective questioning and encouraging mathematical discussions, with examples of classroom interactions.
- Open Discussion (30 mins)
Objective: Facilitate an open discussion where participants can share their thoughts, reflections and/or any questions they may have.
